I also would be interested in the age and experience leve that makes one too senior to find another position.

great post. i have been stressing over this decision for a few months now. i will graduate in May from a top tier school and should finish in the top 1/3 of my class, but i just cant see myself going to work at some firm where i will just be a cog in the machine.
i went to law school with the idea that at some point i wanted to open a general practice, and it just feels like now is the time.
i am married with 1 small child and my wife has a good job with good benefits (teacher). my brother is also a solo and has been for about 5 years now with moderate success.
am i crazy for thinking i can make this work? my plan is to start small and take as many appointed cases as possible until i am able to establish some client base.

What a timely post. I am 2 weeks away from leaving a paying job and opening the doors to my new firm. I am 1 year out of school, single and having the same doubts and fears. None of my clients are coming with me from my old firm, I am just working on networking with referral sources and marketing. I agree that the time is never perfect to do it, but if I waited until I had lots of money saved, or a huge client base, I'd never have done it.

I am in almost the same situation as the Reader, except probably older and more settled (wife, kids and mortgage in addition to student loans). You make an interesting point about the Reader being sufficiently junior to find another position. At what age or experience does one become too senior to find another position?
