Why It Makes Sense To Narrow Your Practice Areas

Carolyn Elefant has an interesting post on finding a niche over at My Shingle this week. It may seem counterintuitive to narrow the focus of your law practice, but often establishing a niche practice brings you more, not less, business.

The niche I hope to create is a bit different than most niches in that it applies to circumstance rather than to a particular field of law. Much like Lisa Solomon, I provide freelance attorney services nationwide, strictly to other attorneys. (see www.HarttLegal.com).
The twist I hope to become recognized for, is that I encourage attorneys who may be in the midst of a serious time crunch to contact me for some much-needed "eleventh-hour" assistance. Obviously, for ethical and logical reasons, I would never agree to assist an attorney requiring a brief to be drafted and filed within two hours, nor would I ever accept an assignment that I was not competent to handle. But I would be willing to assist an attorney who, for example, is up against a strict deadline and requiring someone to "pull an all-nighter" to complete some essential legal research, pleading, or other important assignment.
