Virtual Office Space Options

If you’re starting a firm and not sure that you want to work from home, but are concerned about the cost of rent, a virtual office might be right for you.  This  article from the Chicago Business Leader (11/20/06) gives an overview of the costs and services of HQ Global, one of the larger competitors in the virtual office space arena.

    Indeed.It is really important for a new business owner to realize what do they want.He cannot afford to take any kind of risk,i.e.,he cannot hire a new place as his office space because he doesn't know about the future of his office.So initialy he can start from home.........

    I would DEFINITELY NOT recommend Regus! I am dealing with similar issues regarding the business continuation fee and cleaning/painting fee. I have never felt so ripped off in my life. I think the business continuation fee will be waived, but after reading the above comments, I will probably never see my deposit.

    I definitely would not recommend Regus either. I was charged an $850 termination fee when I left. The fee was included at the end of the contract in small lettering that most people would not notice. In addition, I was also charged a mandataory $200 wear and tear fee. Finally, it has been 2 months since I left and I am still awaiting my $3,600 security deposit. Apparently they cannot pay me b/c of a $6.67 outstanding bill which I didn't even know about. Regus has nice offices, but they definitely try to scam their customers when they try to leave.

    Intelligent Office was my choice for more than one reason over HQ/Regus.
    More upscale, more professional receptionists and more value for the dollar.

    I would not recommend Regus/HQ (at least from what I have experienced). The contracts have an auto-renewal provision that you auto-renew at whatever "market" price they determine if you do not give 90 days written notice that your agreement terminates on the date specified in the agreement. They also have a 90 day post-termination clause forcing you into a 3 month virtual office arrangement, which if you do not pay, they deduct from your security deposit,as well as $200 per office "wear and tear" fee (if your deposit doesn't cover it, good luck getting your mail forwarded). Regus avoids giving you a price list for services other than phone, fax, & parking and you find yourself asking "am I being charged for asking a question". Customer service may be their slogan, but don't be fooled, they are out to service themselves (not bad staff, just poor business model).
  • Is anybody aware of any ethics opinions or other authority concerning solo practitioners working out of virtual offices? There may be a concern that clients are deceived into thinking the attorney has full-time space at a given location. Is this anyone's business but the attorneys? Curious to know what people think, and also curious to know if any of the powers-that-be have addressed the issue.

    I have found Intelligent Office to be a very cost-effective option. IO specializes in virtual offices where Regus seems to do it only when they see that they cannot rent you a full-time office. Their web address is www.intelligentoffice.com
  • HQ, which is now owned by Regus, is a good option for anyone looking to quickly set up a virtual office. They offer turnkey solutions that don't require you to do much. But Regus can be an expensive option. The company has a tendency to nickel and dime you for every conceivable service.
    If you are at all technically proficient and willing to do a little leg work yourself, there are much cheaper ways to establish a "virtual" presence. On the other hand, if you don't want any hassle and you want someone else to sweat the details, Regus, and similar companies in your locality can be a good option.
