Ever since my book, Solo by Choice hit the stands, I’ve been trying to figure out ways to help lawyers – either new solos, solos to be or lawyers who want to build business within their law firms – implement some of the many ideas that I’ve included in the book. So I’m happy to announce the MyShingle on Steroids Workshops, a series of programs that will help you implement these ideas and build relationships with other lawyers at the same time.
The first workshop is 9-5 in Washington D.C. on JUNE 30, 2008. Registration is limited to 24, though if there’s huge demand, I’ll see about setting up a second day. I’m also working with bar groups and vendors to bring this program to other cities. Here’s a rough video on the first program, with a full written description and after the jump. The direct registration link is here. (note – please let me know if the password kicks in when you try to register, and I will fix the link. I wanted to get this announcement up to give enough advance notice. This course is not just for lawyers thinking about or running their own practice. It is for any lawyer, either at a firm or looking to re-enter the practice to find employment or even a law student looking for a job who wants to gain Internet presence, learn about tools that will help achieve success and build relationships on and offline.
Are you tired of shelling out hundreds of dollars for seminars where you learn a bunch of great tips that you never implement when you get home? Fed up with consultants who charge you a huge sum, then tell you that it’s your job to do all the work? If so, the MyShingle on Steroids Workshop Series is right for you. Created by Carolyn Elefant, practicing attorney, proprietor of the widely acclaimed MyShingle blog, and author of the book, Solo by Choice: How to Be the Lawyer You Always Wanted to Be, the MyShingle On Steroids brand of workshops focuses on implementation and interaction rather than just passive learning.
We’re kicking off the MyShingle on Steroids series with an innovative, one of a kind, workshop entitled Building Relationships, Referrals and Reputation On and Off The Web. This jam packed, full day event will introduce you to a variety of social networking and Web 2.0 tools to create a presence online. We’ll identify the ones that work for your practice and personality and get them set up right on the spot. And because every lawyer with a presence on line needs a good photograph, the first thing we’ll do is take a good quality digital photo that you can use online.
Still, online relationships alone aren’t sufficient to build a practice. You also need to take networking offline. So you’ll learn how to leverage your online presence in the offline world. And more importantly, you’ll get acquainted with other participants and improve your communications skills with my own specially designed "Seven Minute Networking," where you’ll get detailed feedback on your inter-personal skills (don’t worry – the session is designed to help you recognize your strengths and play to them). And we’ll also role play a couple of sticky situations like quoting a fee and making a cold or warm call to potential referral sources.
This workshop is appropriate for new solos and also practicing lawyers looking to add a new practice area or reinvigorate their practice. And it’s also a great way for lawyers seeking to re-enter the work force to learn new skills and build a presence online.
To recap, here’s what you’ll have after this day long event:
1. Quality digital photo for use at any online site;
2. At least three of the following tools (your choice):
basic blog, Avvo profile (if available for your jurisdiction), Linked In profile, Facebook profile, JD Supra profile, Docstoc account, Twitter account;
3. Personal introduction to other participants and Feedback from Seven Minute Networking;
4. Practice scripting for quoting a fee and cold/warm calling, plus opportunity to practice calling skills on site!
5. Inclusion in post-workshop Google group and 2 week post-conference "check in call"
6. A copy of Solo by Choice (optional, if you already have the book)
7. Lunch and refreshments throughout the day
The cost for this full day, jam packed event is $225 (or $200 without the book). Participation is limited to 24 and we expect a full house, so sign up ASAP. NOTE – you MUST have a laptop w/ability to access wireless to fully participate. If you don’t please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org for more info.
