Great observation! One of the best parts of being “on my own” is how local business connections seem to spring up everywhere. Instead of being nervous about meetings (as an underling worried about messing up somehow), everything has become an opportunity to learn and grow.

Thanks for this post. You make a good point that I should bear in mind when I interact with colleagues. I was in a large local firm for about 6 years and there are times when I still feel like an associate despite running my own solo practice for about 3 and a half years.

This post really resonated with me. I was so concerned when I went out to start my own law practice that I would feel isolated. However, being a solo practitioner has encouraged me to interact with attorneys and professionals that I may not have otherwise gotten to know. I have a larger network of colleagues now than I had at the law firm. Perhaps this is because once I hung a shingle I was forced to step outside of my comfort zone to seek out mentors. I think the enrichment from the diverse network of attorneys I have now as a solo has helped me to grow as a professional and business owner.
