[...] There are many more solo practitioners then most people realize. Many of these attorneys have been practicing for years and have thriving practices. Because of their success (and perhaps their age), they might use the internet, but not as a marketing tool or a way to find an apprentice or new employee. They might be looking for some young blood to join the firm, and perhaps even take over in the near future. News flash: you will never find these jobs on Symplicity, Craigslist, or any other job site. [...]

What a great post. I posted about a similar topic earlier today on my blog. I also posted a link to your article on because it's so relevant to my earlier post.

Agree!! In my book (www.6psbig3.com) and presentation to law students, I use the food pyramid as an analogy. The pyramid represents your job search plan and the various groups in the pyramid represent the various activities required in your job search. Social networking is just one group in that pyramid and just one activity you need in your job search. For a balanced (successful) job search, you need other activities (groups) as well.

What a great post, Carolyn. I run a networking group for attorneys. Very few of them are on twitter or blog, although about half have websites. But the connections made in the group are amazing. I often get emails from new attorneys looking for work or opportunities. My response is never "sign up for twitter." It is always "come to the next networking meeting." And they do, and most times they leave having made some new friends, gotten some leads on jobs, and feeling much better about their prospects.
I love it when I leave the meeting and folks are still sitting there, chatting away, sharing information and helping each other in a way that only happens off line and in person.

Great post Carolyn. I fully agree that Web 2.0 (or is it 3.0 now) is a great way to get the word out. However, without in person "face time" I can't see how it will turn into business.
