Law Firm Tech Bio: Eric L. Mayer, Overland Park, KS Lawyer

1.  Name, name of firm, location and practice areas.

Eric L. Mayer, Attorney-at-Law; Web: http://militaryadvocacy.com Blog: http://emayerlaw.com;

Location: Wherever I happen to be in the world (but based in Overland Park, Kansas)

Practice Area: Military Criminal Defense and Military Claims

2.  Name 3 to 5 of the most important or frequently used software (desktop or cloud) products in your practice and describe, briefly, how you use them?

  • Evernote. If I talk to you on the phone or in person, chances are I’m taking notes and saving them to Evernote. The ability to sync with all of my devices is invaluable.
  • Dropbox. This one is obvious, but they just upped the free storage to 5GB. Looks like I can go another few months without spending money on cloud storage.
  • Pages. As a Mac user (and a user of Word for more than a decade), this is my favorite word processing program. Plus, you can’t beat the overall price of the iWork suite.
  • XFeed (or, really, any other RSS reader you like). We solos substitute blogs and online discussions for the watercooler/breakroom chat at larger offices. Rather than hunting for ideas and discussions, let them come to you through a good RSS reader.
  • Google Apps. The ability to use my own web address, and the power of GMail. It’s the email way to have your cake and eat it too.

3.  What’s your favorite tech tool under $100?

Fujitsu ScanSnap S510M. I fit entire case files on my electronic devices, and they are allReader searchable PDFs–just what I need to quickly find a critical piece of information during contentious cross-examinations.

4.  Name on favorite app for phone or ipad.

Google Voice. I’ve been waiting for it for months. Now, my number goes wherever I want it to go.

5.  What do you use for legal research?

A mix of Lexis and information gained from online court records.

6.  And…off tech…what’s the neatest and/or most useful piece of non-tech swag that you keep on your desk or in your briefcase?

Post-it notes. Oodles of them. Despite my love for tech, I’m firmly in touch with my analog self.
