MyShingle Fashion: The Statement Blazer: Part II

I said I would be back with a more professional twist on the last outfit, and I am. It was simple enough, and I stayed true to what I said in the last post as far as structuring the ensemble and working with the colors.

What makes a good statement blazer so eye-catching is usually the color. And sometimes, you might be a little stumped as to how to pair that color with other colors to make your outfit work. The best way is to pair a bright or eye-catching hue with a neutral one. That way, you won’t run the risk of having the colors clash horribly, or compete for attention. It’s a good idea, generally, to pick one stand-out piece and build the outfit around that, taking care not to draw too much attention away from that stand-out piece. That’s what we did last time, and that’s what we’re doing this time.

Let’s have a look:

Signature Front Zip Pants in Navy ………. $44.99
Lace Top ………. $29.40
To A Tee Blazer ………. $98
Captivat Pump ………. $26.90
Turquoise and Silver Necklace and Earring Set ………. $25

You might not be able to tell, but those pants are navy. I paired them with the same pretty lace top from last time, and the same gorgeous tailored blazer from Anthropologie.

To make this outfit a bit more professional and suitable for the office, in addition to opting for trousers instead of jeans, I swapped out the wedges for these taupe pumps with a reasonable 3″ heel.

Also, to add a little variety, I switched the cheap necklace from Forever21 with this one I found on Etsy. It’s a little closer to the neck, which should be just fine with that little scoopneck top. I probably wouldn’t wear the earrings with the necklace, though. Instead, I’d probably go for silver hoops or something – nothing too big, but just a pair of simple little silver hoops. With the chunky, brightly colored necklace, smaller, less dangly, simpler earrings work better. If you were going with a simple silver chain, on the other hand, those earrings would probably be fine.

I think the rule at BigLaw is that earrings should be no longer than a quarter inch off the lobe or something ridiculous like that. Thankfully, most of you work in smaller offices, and aren’t forced to hold a ruler to your face in front of the mirror. To that end, those earrings should be okay, perhaps a little on the long side. That can be left to your judgment. The only point I’m trying to make is: simple necklace, eye-catching earrings; eye-catching or chunky necklace, simple earrings. A good rule of thumb to keep from looking overloaded with baubles and trinkets.

And there we have a more professional twist on that great statement blazer.
