Solo Law Side Gigs: Political Cybersquatting and Cartooning

Screen Shot 2016-08-09 at 6.02.59 PMWith a first place win in a Thanksgiving pie-eating contest , authorship of the Urban Dictionary definition of  legitimate rape  (and a profile at Above the Law ), a post as a web comic responsible for the Hillary Potter series and ownership of the ClintonKaine.com web domain (purchased back in 2011 for $7.67), you could say that 28-year old, Washington D.C.-based attorney  Jeremy Peter Green is a classic, albeit 21st century version of a Renaissance Man.

But for Green, these gigs are nothing but side hustles to the desired main event: starting a solo law practice in the nation’s capital for tenants’ rights projects and pro bono matters like sex worker rights, sick leave and employment law. To that end, Green is seeking $90,000 for the domain from the highest bidder – be it the Clinton/Kaine campaign or even her opponents.   But so far, no takers.

In the meantime, there may be other ways for Green to come up with the funds to get his firm off the ground. Lots of SEO experts and lawyers might be interested in the site’s traffic (108,000 and counting) that’s destined to continue through November and beyond.

Green could run ads on the site and generate enough to cover law firm rent and malpractice. Or, he could self-publish Hillary Potter comic books and maybe even 3D print some collectable action figures.

Alternatively, because Green hopes to start a firm with a public-interest bent, he could consider starting a  public interest  law firm. That way, he could solicit donations from foundations or  crowdfunding and possibly qualify for loan forgiveness if he has debt. And of course, Green could always use the visibility and political nature of the site to target paying or low bono  clients – starting with the large number of  employees stiffed by Donald Trump .
