MyShingle Fashion: Stylish Shells

Winter is fast approaching, despite the mild temperatures stretching across parts of the country, and that means it’s time to pull out the wool or lined suits. And with lined suits come the light, silky, delicate little shells, because if you wear anything else underneath, you run the risk of offending the court with rather unsavory odors.

Also, can I just nominate “May it please the court” as the most awkward phrase ever? They made us repeat it ad nauseum in moot court, but from what I understand, only the super-formal judges make you actually say it in the courtroom. It’s just an awkward phrase.

Now that we’ve settled that order of business, we can move on to the real purpose of today’s post: pretty, chic shells to wear under your suit jacket. Here are some of my favorites, all priced pretty reasonably. As always, click on the image to be taken to the purchasing page.

Ann Taylor - $49.50

Warm colors and cute ruffles. Not bad. (Although I’m generally pretty careful with ruffles. If you’re not careful and go overboard, you end up looking like Amy from Little Women – the one where super-dashing, pre-Rat Pack Peter Lawford played Laurie. Swoon!

Goodness.

I’m going to admit that I was never a fan of Jo and the professor and would have much preferred her with Laurie. I know, I’m an awful person. I don’t care. Peter Lawford! How do you resist Peter Lawford?! Seriously, tell me, please, I’d like to know.

Chico's - $69

I love purple, and this one is all shimmery and glitzy. Awesome.

Ann Taylor - $98

Lace is back, and I love the contrast between black and white here, as well as the asymmetrical tiers. Fancy!

Ann Taylor - $78

Now, it says this is pink, but it looks more nude/beige to me. And the good thing about a neutral shell like this one is that you can really step it up with your jewelry or accessories without looking like there is way too much going on.

Ann Taylor - $29.99

Similar to the first one I posted but a little different. And a bit more cost-effective.

Macy's - $26.24

Gosh, I love this color. And I like the delicate little ruffled rosettes up top. I would wear this in a heartbeat.

The Limited - $16.99

I had to feature this one just because of the color. I love that rich, warm pumpkin color. It makes me ridiculously happy. But that’s probably my Thanksgiving-excitement speaking. I’m making a pumpkin pie from scratch this year!

Don’t go thinking I’m all Suzie Homemaker or Betty Crocker over here – I’m only making it from scratch because the ones at the grocery store used to taste awesome, but then they found a way to make them taste really awful instead.

Ann Taylor - $78

Lace! I love lace. And again, this one’s a neutral color so you can amp up the accessories in a way that you might not be able to if you’re wearing a colored top. You have a little bit more wiggle room. And, man, it’s just so pretty.

Kenneth Cole - $59

Last, this pretty printed red cowl-neck number. I do like cowl necks but I end up fussing with them all day because I’m convinced that the way the cowl drapes makes me look ridiculous and inept at life. I have a total cowl-complex.

And there we have some of my top picks for cute, reasonably priced shells to wear under your suit jacket, plus a couple of my ridiculous anecdotes and random fawning over deceased (?) Hollywood stars. I can’t help it – I just really loved the Rat Pack. How could you not?
